Where big animals roam the primeval forests

These beautiful expanses of nature are traditionally called royal hunting grounds. You will see the primeval forest and its residents such as the magnificent bison, red-deer, roe-deer, lynx, wildboar and beavers. You can also admire colourful butterflies which represent the family of some 8,500 insect species living in the Bialowieza Forest, and listen with pleasure to the early morning concert by thousands of nightingales. Before going to the bison reserve, have a good look at the forest giants: 40 m high pines, 50 m high lindens, old oaks and enjoy the variety of some 2,500 species of mushrooms. Some bisons are nearly 2 m tall and weigh more than a ton. Don’t get deceived by their bulk and slow movements, if necessary these animals can jump over a two metre fence. The herd of over two hundred bisons live in the Bialowieza National Park - their only natural habitat in the world. Besides bisons you can also photograph tarpans - little Polish horses - elks and rare birds. Special demonstration enclosures will make your task of photographing bisons and tarpans easier. Birds are more difficult to spot, but numerous watching sites will certainly help a lot. Of the total surface area of the park (26,250 acres), some 24,000 acres are overgrown with magnificent natural forest. The strict nature reserve occupies 45% of the total park’s area. The length of tourist trails is 21km. Those sections which cut across the strict nature reserve are the most spectacular, but they can only be entered with a park guide. Worth recommendation is the footbridge trail know as „The Bison’s Ribs", leading through the water-logged forest to the bison reserve.
