Sailors' Academy - 925 sq km of the Szczecin Lagoon
Large parts of the Baltic coast were controlled by the Vikings in the Middle Ages. They had their strongholds and harbours around the Szczecin Lagoon, too. Now there are cultural events organised in Miedzyzdroje and Wolin which refer to their presence in the region, and the Szczecin Lagoon still attracts many enthusiasts of sailing.
This large water body spreads over 952 square kilometres and the length of the local waterways exceeds 250 km. It has links with the Baltic. Using the intricate system of canals and lakes, sailors can even reach Berlin. The average depth of the lagoon waters is 4.2 m. There are several harbours and marinas located on the waterfront of the lagoon and the Baltic coast. They offer comprehensive services to sailors, including the rental of yachts. The Training Centre of the Polish Sailing Union at Trzebiez is well-know to all fans of sailing adventure. Yachts of all sizes can be chartered, including big boats with 338 sq m of sails spread and accommodating as many as 25 persons on board.
The city of Szczecin can be reached from the Szczecin Lagoon through the waterway of the Odra river and Lake Dabie. The marina of Szczecin Dabie can receive yachts with a draught of three metres. It has a slip, sailorÕs store, boatbuilder's workshop, accommodation and catering facilities.
