The Pieniny mountains, best seen from down below and high aboveThe Pieniny is a small mountain range of 3 5km but they managed to catch the fancy of a grandson of the last Peruvian chief. Historians believe that the quipu - a special native Peruvian way of keeping records by means of knots made on a string - secretly buried in the old Niedzica castle can explain the mystery of the legendary Inca treasure. The Dunajec Gorge is the most spectacular attraction of the Pieniny Range. Raft runs down the rapids of the Dunajec River amidst peaks, steep rocky walls and high precipices dropping down to the river are an unforgettable adventure. Wandering along the Pieniny trails from Szczawnica to Czorsztyn, hikers climb to the peak of Mt Sokolica, to the summit of Mt Trzy Korony and visit the renovated castle at Czorsztyn. All these sites command a beautiful view of the Dunajec Gorge and the panorama of the Pieniny Range with the breathtaking beauty of its nature. Numerous ravines of the Male Pieniny with the most picturesque Homole cannot be overlooked. Visitors can also visit to the famous health resorts of Szczawnica and Kroscienko, where the centre of the Pieniny National Park is located. The beauty of the Pieniny can best be discovered during a five-day tour from Kroscienko via Przehyba, Rytro, Hala Labowska, Jaworzyna Krynicka to Krynica. Overnight accommodation is provided by mountain huts and guest rooms at local farms. The majority of the Pieniny trails will take you to the Beskid Sadecki, divided into two ranges by the Poprad river. Boat trips (Piwniczna - Rytro) are organised on the Poprad in the summer season. This region features some 200km of tourist trails, many mountain huts, the charming city of Stary Sacz with its old monastery (13th c.), and the famous spa of Krynica which attracts musicians, painters and mountain bike fans. More experienced hikers can try their skill in the Beskid Niski. One of the nicest trails is the trail running from Krynica via Mochnaczka Nizna, Regietow, Krzywa, Jasionka, Wyszowatka, Grab, Ozenna, Dukielska Pass, and Zyndranowa to Komancza; it leads through remote countryside where nature reigns, where little Lemko timber churches cling to the valley slopes and the remains of their villages are overgrown with grass and shrubs; there is also a number of military cemeteries dating back to World War I. If you follow this trail, be ready to set up camp near little streams or in rustic cottages. There are two equestrian centres en route (Gladyszewo, Siary near Gorlice) which offer visitors the opportunity to ride on the little mountain horses known as huculy. These rides amidst such splendid nature often turn to unforgettable adventures. Information:
