City on nine hills

Picturesquely set on nine hills, Chelmno preserved its chessboard urban layout, 2,270 meter long medieval fortified walls, and one of Europe’s best examples of defensive architecture – the Gothic-Renaissance town hall with the old Chelmno measure, the 4.35m long pret chelminski.

The sacral buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries include the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, Dominican and Franciscan churches, Church of the Holy Spirit, Cistercian and Benedictine monastic complex and St Martin’s Chapel.

On the 14th of February each year, the inhabitants of Chelmno ostentatiously celebrate St Valentine’s Day. Their special reason is that the local parish church has kept St Valentine’s reliquary for many centuries.
