Chivalrous PolandThe Teutonic Knights, a religious order that expanded into Poland to defend its borders from pagan tribes, rapidly grew into a power that threatened the Polish state in the 14th century. This power was broken in 1410 by King Wladyslaw Jagiello, who fought a victorious battle over the Teutonic Knights at Grunwald. The battle of Grunwald is re-enacted every year in mid-July. About 1000 supporters of the tradition, both Polish and foreign, engage in "combat" during the re-enactment. A number of medieval festivals are held at old castles. The most interesting are the Great Knights’ Carnival, held in February, and the International Knights’ Tournament which has been held for years in July, both in Golub-Dobrzyn. The Knights’ Tournament in Bolkow in Lower Silesia is held in June, and Medieval Culture Days in September. |
