Biebrza National Park - 250,000 acres of natural boglands

Such sites in Europe where there are more than 450 milllion litres of water on the area of 250,000 acres exist no more. This paradise of some 850 species of plants constitutes the habitat of elk, rich avifauna and animals not to be encountered elsewhere. The dances and voices of cranes - the bird which symbolises LOT the Polish Airlines - can be seen and heard in the Biebrza River valley.

Some 185 bird species of the total 260 have their nesting grounds on the park territory. The Biebrza National Park occupies an area of about 150,000 acres and is symbolised by the ruff; every single individual of this curious bird species has different plumage. The common sundew which feeds on insects can also be found.

Hiking through the park can be a real adventure - don’t be surprised to find a beaver in your tent. The unspoiled nature of the park is best admired from the kayak, boat or traditional raft.

Very scenic and memorable can be the 18km hike through the showpiece of the park - the Red Marsh, a strict nature reserve for 75 years, inhabited by about 400 elks.

Floating through the park waters you will be able to record the voices of grey lag geese, see a stiffen bittern, and familiarise with wild otters which behave like a domestic pet. Evening hours are best for watching beavers.

The most convenient starting points are located at Goniadz, Rajgrod, Augustow or Lomza. The Biebrza National Park is found some 150km north-east of Warsaw, near the road leading to Lomza, Grajewo and Augustow.
